The ballroom was nearly empty when Daniel stepped inside. Faint echoes of laughter lingered in the corners, as though the night itself refused to let go of the memories. The chandeliers dimmed, scattering golden light across the polished floor where countless couples had swayed only hours before.
But he wasn’t looking for them. He was looking for her.
Isabella stood by the window, her silver gown catching the moonlight like water. She seemed to belong to another world, too fragile to remain in this one. Her eyes met his, and for a moment the silence between them carried every word they had never dared to speak.
“You’re still here,” Daniel whispered, as though afraid she would vanish if he spoke too loudly.
“I was waiting,” she replied softly, “hoping you’d come.”
He approached slowly, each step weighted with the knowledge of time slipping away. Tomorrow she would leave—duty, family, and the inevitability of choices made long ago had carved their paths apart. Tonight was all they had.
“May I?” he asked, extending his hand.
Her lips curved into the faintest smile. She placed her hand in his, and together they stepped onto the deserted floor. No orchestra remained, no crowd to applaud, but the two of them needed nothing else. He pulled her close, and they began to sway to an imagined melody that only their hearts could hear.
The world outside melted away. There was no tomorrow, no goodbyes waiting, no destiny pulling them apart. There was only the warmth of her breath against his shoulder, the softness of her fingers resting on his chest, and the rhythm of their unspoken love.
“Daniel,” she murmured, her voice trembling, “if this is the last time…”
“It won’t be the last,” he interrupted gently, tightening his embrace. “As long as we remember, we’ll dance again—even if only in dreams.”
She closed her eyes, allowing herself to believe him, if only for the length of a single song that existed only in their souls.
When the final step came, they stood still, holding on as though the night itself begged them not to let go. But eventually, reality crept in. With a soft kiss on her forehead, Daniel released her hand.
Isabella turned toward the door, her figure fading into the shadows of dawn.
And there, on the empty ballroom floor, Daniel whispered to the silence:
“This was our last dance. But in my heart, it will play forever.”
