Modernism was a cultural and artistic movement that emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a response to rapid industrialization, urbanization, and the impact of World War I. It rejected traditional forms and embraced experimentation, fragmentation, and new perspectives. Writers and artists focused on inner thoughts, uncertainty, and the breakdown of established norms. In literature, stream of consciousness became popular, showing characters’ minds in a realistic way. Modernism aimed to capture the complexity of modern life, questioning reality, identity, and meaning in a rapidly changing world.
