In a quiet forest, beside a sparkling stream, lived a tiny pebble named Pippin. Pippin was not shiny like the other stones, nor big like the boulders. He was small, round, and a little gray.
Every day, the animals passed by the stream. The birds sang, the deer drank water, and the squirrels chased each other. But no one ever noticed Pippin.
One rainy morning, the stream flooded. A little ant named Nino was trapped on a leaf, floating fast toward a big waterfall.
“Help! Help!” squeaked Nino.
The big rocks were too far, and the animals couldn’t reach in time. But Pippin, lying near the edge, rolled as hard as he could into the stream.
Plop!
The leaf bumped into Pippin and stopped.
Nino crawled off safely to the shore. He looked back and smiled, “You saved me!”
From that day on, the animals called Pippin The Kindest Pebble. He may have been small, but his heart was the biggest of all.
